As it is popularly known for its temples, Trichy does see a number of festivals that are celebrated round the year.
Few festivals those can be mentioned are as follows:
Samayapuram Mariamman temple festivals are famous among all meaning both people of Trichy and outsiders and foreigners too. Three major festivals happen in this temple annually. The first is the poothirithal which is a festival of flowers. Flowers amounting to about 35,000 to 40,000 rupees is used for decorating the Goddess and flowers are thrown on the deity. The festival is celebrated with real pomp that attracts people from many places. This happens between March and April every year. The other festival that happens here is the pancha prakaram and not to forget the Brahmotsavam that is celebrated in a grand manner.
Any place in Tamil Nadu , we can see people celebrating pongal. Trichy also celebrates Pongal grandly. It is the way to thank the farmers, Sun God, Moon etc. Basically it is a Harvest festival that is celebrated in the month of January. Even the cows are given a lot of respect during this festival.
Float festival happens in March-April at Trichy. This festival is celebrated in the name of Lord Ranganatha Swamy. Deities are let to float on water using rafts decorating the idols with flowers and lamps.
Then comes the Jala thiru vizha. Women celebrate this festival during September-October. Potters are asked to make clay idols of cows and calves and they are worshipped for 9 days. Religious slokas are recited and after 9 days a procession is held and the idols are dissolved into the river.
Vaikunta Ekadasi festival is celebrated in the name of Lord Vishnu for 21 long days. Paramapada vasal, the Northern Gate of the Srirangam temple is open only once in a year and is believed to be the opening for Heaven. Lord Vishnu is decorated with lots of flowers, gems, ornaments etc and brought out via the Paramapada vasal. These 21 days, Srirangam looks heavenly that one must surely experience. December-January, it is the time for Vaikunta Ekadasi.
